A frozen pipe is a common winter problem. Water inside the pipe can turn to ice. Ice can block the water flow. It can also make the pipe crack or burst.
This guide is simple and safe. If you are ever unsure, call a plumber.

How to Tell a Pipe Is Frozen
You might have a frozen pipe if
• Your faucet has little water or no water
• Only one sink or one shower has no water
• You see frost on a pipe
• You notice a strange smell from a drain

Step 1 Turn Off the Water
If you can, turn off the main water shut off for your home. This helps stop a big flood if the pipe breaks.
If you do not know where it is, check our hub page for shut off guides

Step 2 Open the Right Faucet
Open the faucet that is not working. Leave it open a little.
If the cold line is frozen, open the cold side.
If the hot line is frozen, open the hot side.
This helps release pressure as the ice melts.
Step 3 Look for Leaks
Check around the pipe, under sinks, and in the basement.
If you see water, turn off the main water shut off right away.
If there is a lot of water, do not touch electrical cords or outlets near the leak. Call for help.
Step 4 Warm the Pipe Slowly
Only warm the pipe if you can see it and reach it safely.
Try one of these
• Use a hair dryer on low or medium
• Use a space heater to warm the room around the pipe
• Wrap the pipe with warm towels
Start warming near the faucet end first. Then move along the pipe toward the colder area. Keep going until water flows again.
Do not leave heaters alone while they are running.

What Not to Do
Do not use an open flame like a torch or lighter.
Do not use a barbecue or propane heater indoors.
Do not crank the heat too high in one spot.
Do not try to force water through the pipe.
If You Cannot Find the Frozen Spot
Sometimes the frozen part is inside a wall, crawl space, attic, or garage.
If you cannot find it, if water does not come back, or if you think the pipe may have burst, turn off the main water shut off and call a professional.
After the Water Starts Running
• Keep the faucet running a small stream for a few minutes
• Check again for leaks
• Leave cabinet doors open under sinks to let warm air in
• Turn up the heat a little for the rest of the day
How to Stop Pipes From Freezing Again
These simple steps help a lot
• Keep your home warm, even at night
• Seal cold drafts near pipes
• Add pipe insulation on exposed pipes
• Let a faucet drip during very cold weather
• Disconnect outdoor hoses and shut off outdoor taps if you have a shut off valve
